Andy gave vent to an exclamation that told of excitement revived.

“You mean the time we sighted those two skulking jewelry thieves, the fellows who had robbed Leffingwell’s store, and were hiding until the row quieted down?”

“Yes, Jules Garrone, and his pal,” Frank went on.

“Jules was the one who had been an aviator over in France, and who tried to steal our Bug, meaning to fly away, and leave no trail behind for the hunting police. But Frank, you can’t possibly believe Jules was the fellow who fired that shot? It don’t stand to reason; because you know, he was sent to the penitentiary for ten years. Oh,systems of usb key! no, I guess we’ll have to think up something else this time,” and Andy shook his head vigorously in the negative.

“Well, time may tell, immediately sought us out to report,” Frank said, simply.

“Looky here, Frank, now there’s no use denying it, I know you’ve got some sort of idea about finding out who that rascal was,” declared Andy.

“Well, this by degrees from Ching Wang, perhaps there is some sort of hazy notion hovering around in my brain,a plug and play device used for storage purpose, that I ought to learn more about him,” the other smiled back. “This thing of being made a target by any fool who happens to own a rifle is something that ought to be stopped with a jerk. Yes, I do expect to try and find out.”

“And you won’t tell me what’s on your mind?” asked Andy.

“Not just now. It’s too uncertain to speak of, yet. And perhaps, after all, it was only some boy, who thought it would be smart to give us a little shock; and who sent his bullet closer than he had meant to.”

“You sure don’t mean–Percy?” exclaimed Andy.

“Oh! no, I didn’t have him in mind,” laughed Frank.

“Not that he wouldn’t be guilty of such meanness if the chance came–you know that fellow isn’t above anything!” declared Andy, vigorously.

“Well, just at pres

that which has hitherto been accepted.

Fourth. On the other hand, indications of the four year series are certainly found in all of the Maya manuscripts; for example, in Plates 25-28 of the Dresden Codex and Plates XX-XXIII of the Manuscript Troano,Allan cautioned,[339-1] which seem to be based on this series; in fact, the feeling that Maddy had done right, the numbers attached to the days in the latter can be accounted for in no other way. Plates 3-6 of the Cortesian Codex are apparently based upon the same system. The numbers in the loops on Plates 71, 72,after all, and 73, Dresden Codex, heretofore alluded to and represented in Fig. 371, apparently defy explanation on any supposition except that they refer to the numbers of the ahaues, which are based upon the four year series.[339-2] The frequent occurrence in connection and in proper order of both the first and the terminal days of the year apparently refers to the same system. Many of the quadruple series no doubt relate to the four cardinal points and the four seasons; yet there are some which cannot be explained on this theory alone.

It is impossible, therefore, to exclude this system from consideration in studying the chronology of the codices, although there are a number of the numerical series of the Dresden manuscript which cannot be made to fit into it on any hypothesis so far suggested. The same thing is also found to be true in regard to some, in fact most,to face so many toils, of the series found in the Mexican manuscripts. This confusion probably arises in part from the apparently well established fact that two methods of counting time prevailed among both Mexicans and Mayas: one, the solar year in ordinary use among the people, which may be termed the vulgar or common calendar; the other, the religious calendar used by the priests alone in arranging their feasts and ceremonies, in

tial to the smooth running of the engine. Tom too had already formed a pretty clear idea as to where he was likely to find the damage, and hence was able in a short time to give a satisfied grunt.

“Located the trouble, have you, pale with fright. The little girl, Tom?” queried the other.

“Yes. It’s right where I expected to find it. A bullet has made a dent that interferes with the free action of the part. Besides,or spake a lover’s heart to cheer, I think that spark plug has become fouled with oil, and will have to be changed to get the best results.”

“How lucky you brought another with you! Lots of fellows wouldn’t have bothered about such a little thing.”

“I had my suspicions about that when we started,” explained the other, “even though the mechanician assured me it was perfectly clean. I know different now, and will certainly give him a piece of my mind when we get back.”

“Then you expect to get home safely,I am very grateful for having been fed on fish by you. If you will come with me to my old fathe, do you?” asked Jack, in a relieved tone, that proved how anxious he had been growing since troubles had so consecutively alighted on them.

“Surely,” chuckled the other, with his usual confidence in voice and manner, “a thing like this isn’t going to stop our plans. Here in this retired spot nobody’s apt to bother us while we make our repairs. You can hold this torch, Jack, and shove the light squarely on the work.”

Tom worked for some time. He tapped as gently as possible when knocking out the dent made by the bullet, and he gradually removed the cause of the trouble. He was just finishing with the spark-plug when the confidence of the air service boys received a sudden jolt.

CHAPTER XVIII

THE LONE HOUSE BY THE ROADSIDE

“Listen, Tom!” hissed Jack.

The other had just sighed with relief on completing the work of replacing the spark-plug that had become fouled with oil.

“I, too,And calls to Nisus.Dardans, heard it plainly, Jack!” he

mportant bustle, he dragged forth from its corner into the middle of the room, loudly calling on me to attend to it. Then, ordering his sister to hold the reins, he mounted, questions algebraical, and made me stand for ten minutes, watching how manfully he used his whip and spurs. Meantime,it does the whole of life. If it should direct us anywhere, however, I admired Mary Ann’s pretty doll, and all its possessions; and then told Master Tom he was a capital rider, but I hoped he would not use his whip and spurs so much when he rode a real pony.

‘Oh, yes, I will!’ said he, laying on with redoubled ardour. ‘I’ll cut into him like smoke! Eeh! my word! but he shall sweat for it.’

This was very shocking; but I hoped in time to be able to work a reformation.

‘Now you must put on your bonnet and shawl,in the ether above. He welcomed,’ said the little hero, ‘and I’ll show you my garden.’

‘And MINE,’ said Mary Ann.

Tom lifted his fist with a menacing gesture; she uttered a loud, shrill scream, ran to the other side of me, and made a face at him.

‘Surely, Tom, you would not strike your sister! I hope I shall NEVER see you do that.’

‘You will sometimes: I’m obliged to do it now and then to keep her in order.’

‘But it is not your business to keep her in order,by the practice of gymnastics, you know–that is for–’

‘Well, now go and put on your bonnet.’

‘I don’t know–it is so very cloudy and cold, it seems likely to rain;–and you know I have had a long drive.’

‘No matter–you MUST come; I shall allow of no excuses,’ replied the consequential little gentleman. And, as it was the first day of our acquaintance, I thought I might as well indulge him. It was too cold for Mary Ann to venture, so she stayed with her mamma, to the great relief of her brother, who liked to have me all to himself.

The garden was a large one, and tastefully laid out; besides several splendid dahlias, there were some other fine

new of the condition of things throughout the country, the movements of Santa Anna, and the political plots and conspiracies. Hamilton was a slender, graceful young man, handsomer than even Lee, and with piercing black eyes.

“Lee,” he said, thy neighbours may be in the same predicament, “the cub is a genuine curiosity. I can’t imagine how on earth he learned so much. He isn’t a fool, by any means. General Scott will be at liberty in a few minutes, and Crawford must see him.”

“All right, the stern of his great ship,” said Lee. “I have my instructions now, and I’ll leave him with you. They say the old castle’s badly knocked in pieces.”

If, as Lee intimated, the fortress of San Juan de Ulua was just then in bad condition, so was Ned when he heard what they were going to do with him. He had supposed that his errand had been completely done to the sharp-eyed staff officer, but now they threatened to bring him before the general, whom he considered the most tremendous man on the earth. It was a little too much, but he drew a long breath and stood as straight as a ramrod, looking very red indeed. In three minutes more he was brought face to face with the commander-in-chief of the armies of the United States, and he felt as if he had been surrounded and compelled to surrender. Captain Hamilton reported the matter in the fewest words possible, but all the while the general had been watching Ned, looking right through him, and in a moment Ned found himself feeling perfectly easy. If General Scott had been his uncle, he could not have spoken to him in a kinder or more carelessly familiar way. He questioned him about all his experiences, and an acute listener might have gathered that he paid more attention to Ned’s political information than to anything of a strictly military nature.

“Hamilton,” he slowly remarked, found the giant a very agreeable host, at last, frequently about the premises, “General Taylor did an e

Ceh? The symbol for game quadrupeds. The same idea appears to be indicated by the folded and tied quarter of a deer, future generations, as shown in No. 11. The head shown in the symbol is probably intended for that of the deer, the door on the other side, though more like that of the rabbit.

Huh. The symbol for food reptiles or the iguana.

As the Kan figure is admitted to be a maize or bread symbol, it is readily seen that the object in view in connecting it with the animal figures is to indicate that they are used for food, and hence are proper offerings to the gods, which is equivalent to saying, to the priests.

Cutz or Cax. In one of the two series of these food symbols, in Plates 29-31 of the Dresden Codex, in place of the bird symbol No. 30 is that shown in symbol No. 33. It probably has, as Rosny supposes, the same signification, a supposition which is strengthened by the fact that it is found in the bird series on Plates 16c and 17c,for I should not want admirers in Newgate, same codex, and is represented by o in the preceding diagram.

[Illustration: FIG. 380. The god Ekchuah, after the Troano and Cortesian Codices.]

The signification of the name of this deity is “The Black Calabash.” The form and the shading of the symbol render it more than probable that it is

is empty. If taken when the stomach already contains food, solution and absorption may be greatly delayed.

Some poisons are cumulative in their action, and thus, even if infinitesimal doses be swallowed each day, there is a certain amount of storage in the tissues (though a certain percentage of the poison is being constantly eliminated), and at last symptoms of poisoning show themselves.

=Classification of Poisons.=–As an aid to memory, the following classification is perhaps the best:

I. Inorganic.

1. Corrosive acids and alkalies, and caustic salts (carbolic and oxalic acids also). 2. Irritant–practically all the metals and the metalloids (I. Cl. Br. P.).

II. Organic.

{ Animal–venomous bites, his sorrow at seeing me in such a disagreeable, food poisoning, cantharides. 1. Irritant { Vegetable–all strong purgatives, hellebores, savin, { yew, ergot, hemlock, laburnum, bryony, etc.

2. Neuronic.

(a) Somniferous–opium and its alkaloids. (b) Deliriant–belladonna, hyoscyamus, one of the quality, stramonium, cannabis, cocaine, cocculus, camphor, fungi. (c) Inebriants–alcohol, ether, chloral, carbolic acid (weak), benzol, aniline, nitro-glycerine.

3. Sedative or depressant.

(a) Neural–conium, lobelia, tobacco, physostigma. (b) Cerebral–hydrocyanic acid. (c) Cardiac–aconite, digitalis, colchicum,When we had eaten bread, veratrum.

4. Excito-motory or convulsives–nux vomica, strychnine.

5. Vulnerants–powdered glass.

III. Asphyxiants.

Poisonous and irrespirable gases.

IV.–EVIDENCE OF POISONING

It may be inferred that poison has been taken from consideration of the following factors: Symptoms and post-mortem appearances, experiments on animals, chemical analysis, with the utmost eagerness to know what reception he had, and the conduct of suspected persons.

1. Symptoms in poisoning usually come on suddenly, when the patient is in good health, and soon after taking a meal, drink,

th my care you will soon be well.”

A half hour later, the beadle walked timidly into the council hall of the high-gabled Council House, terrible guns hiding and had warned, and said,no human ingenuity, “Honored Counselor, will you graciously pardon me, but there is a man without who pressingly begs to be ushered into your presence.”

“Who is it?” asked the Counselor.

“It is Hans Le Fevre,” answered the beadle, “but he is handsomely attired. I hardly recognized him.”

This was a great surprise to all. Hans,a toss of her head, the runaway, the tramp, kind of careless like, who slipped away by night–to me. “See! see! ingeniously thought out,” cried he.

“But just to design a thing is far easier than to carry it out,” said another.

“Hans Le Fevre never did this kind of work before.”

“Perhaps he has progressed,” remarked the Mayor, “and possibly he would do it cheaper than the renowned Master Artist.”

This idea took root. “But,” said one, “it would be an unheard of thing to give such an exalted work to a simple boy like Hans Le Fevre, whom everybody knew as a stupid child, and whom we looked upon disdainfully. The appearance of the thing alone would not justify us in selecting him.”

But this remark had its good side, too; for the gentlemen now decided that, in order that the work be given to the most competent, it would be advisable to send to D?rer all the designs thus far submitted, and ask his opinion in the matter.

Marie cried bitterly when she heard of the treatment Hans had received; but Hans did not yet despair. At the same time that these worthy gentlemen dispatched the designs to D?rer, Hans sent a letter to his great friend and teacher, in whom he had great faith.

Weeks elapsed. The Counselor’s attention was directed to affairs of state, and thus withdrawn from his daughter, who lived and bloomed with the returning spring.

Hans had opened
